Calling All Healers: Black Elk Speaks, Rainbow Warriors and other Prophecies

Throughout history, spiritual leaders, shamans, and visionaries have shared wisdom passed down through generations. They have spoken of the future, of unity, of great change, and of healing. From the powerful words of Black Elk Speaks to the Rainbow Prophecy of the Hopi and similar prophecies worldwide, these messages form the foundation of many spiritual teachings, including those in our life coaching program.

We incorporate readings such as Black Elk Speaks into our spiritual life coaching curriculum because it embodies the essence of a healer’s path: the responsibility, the hardship, the vision, and the call to serve. It teaches students to see beyond the physical, understand the interconnectedness of all life, and walk in balance with the unseen.

Let’s explore these prophecies, their meaning, and why healers everywhere are called to this work.

Black Elk Speaks: A Vision of Healing and Unity

Black Elk Speaks (1932) is the autobiography of Black Elk, a Lakota man who experienced profound visions as a child. His story, as told to John Neihardt, recounts the history of his people, the struggles of the Lakota during westward expansion, and a spiritual vision of unity and healing for all nations.

His vision—often referred to as the "Great Vision"—was a powerful spiritual experience that shaped not only his life but also the cultural memory of his people. In this vision, he beheld the sacred Tree of Life standing at the center of the world, its roots deep in the Earth and its branches reaching toward the heavens. Around it was gathered a great circle, or hoop, representing the unity of all nations, races, and beings—each unique, yet equal and connected.

This vision spoke of a time when humanity would rediscover its sacred purpose, living in harmony with nature and each other. It revealed a future where healing would flow from wisdom, compassion, and a reconnection with spirit.

Despite witnessing deep sorrow—the displacement, starvation, and loss endured by his people—he never let despair eclipse the light of this prophecy. He held firmly to the hope that one day, balance would return, the sacred hoop would be mended, and the world would walk once more in beauty.

This message is central to our coaching program. The journey of a healer is not just about personal enlightenment but about lifting others, bridging divides, and mending the spiritual wounds of the world.

The Rainbow Prophecy: A Global Awakening

The Rainbow Prophecy, often attributed to various Indigenous tribes, including the Hopi and Cree, speaks of a time when people of all races, colors, and backgrounds will come together to heal the Earth. It states that a new tribe—the Rainbow Warriors—will rise, bringing wisdom and balance back to the world.

This prophecy closely mirrors Black Elk’s vision. It describes a moment when the earth suffers, the animals vanish, and people become disconnected from the sacred. But in this darkness, those who remember the old ways will emerge to guide humanity back to harmony.

It is no coincidence that many people today feel a strong pull toward healing practices, spiritual teachings, and ancestral wisdom. The Rainbow Prophecy suggests this is the time when those meant to be healers will awaken and step into their purpose.

The Rainbow Prophecy and the Battle for Unity

The rainbow is more than just a spectrum of light; it is a universal symbol woven into the mythologies and spiritual teachings of countless cultures. It represents harmony, renewal, and the bridge between worlds—a sign of balance between light and shadow, earth and sky, spirit and matter. In Norse mythology, the Bifröst connects mortals to the gods. In many Indigenous traditions, the Rainbow Serpent is a creator force, shaping the land and bringing life. The biblical rainbow of Noah is a covenant between humanity and the Divine, a promise of renewal after the storm. And in modern movements, the rainbow flag of LGBTQ+ pride stands for inclusivity, resilience, and the power of love in the face of oppression.

The Rainbow Prophecy—an Indigenous teaching that has surfaced in various traditions, including those of the Hopi, Cree, and other First Nations—speaks of a time when humanity will face great trials, when greed and division will poison the land and spirit. But it also foretells of a return: a rising of people from all colors, faiths, and walks of life who will come together as Rainbow Warriors, not in violence, but in unity, to heal the Earth and restore balance.

The War on the Rainbow: A Sign of the Prophecy in Motion

Today, the rainbow has become a battleground in modern politics—a symbol of love and unity that is now being met with fear, restriction, and erasure. Across the world, we see movements trying to ban rainbow flags, rewrite history, and silence voices that embrace the full spectrum of human existence. But this very resistance is the proof that the prophecy is in motion.

History has shown that light is most feared by those who thrive in darkness. The rainbow is being attacked not because it is weak, but because it is powerful. It is a force that challenges rigid structures, demands inclusion, and reminds us that diversity is not a threat—it is the very foundation of life itself. Those who try to tear down the rainbow only accelerate its rise.

The Rainbow Warriors are already here—activists, healers, teachers, artists, and ordinary people who refuse to let the world be divided by fear. They are the ones planting seeds of understanding, standing up against oppression, and reclaiming sacred wisdom. They are proving that the rainbow is not just a flag, a myth, or a dream—it is a living energy, a movement, a prophecy unfolding before our eyes.

Now Is the Time

The Rainbow Prophecy does not promise an easy path. It does not tell of a future that simply appears—it is a call to action. We are being asked to choose. Will we let fear divide us, or will we rise together? Will we turn away from the suffering of the Earth and its people, or will we step into our role as healers and warriors of light?

The rainbow is not fading. It is rising. And with it, so must we.

The rainbow has always been a sacred sign—bridging sky to soil, divinity to diversity. In many cultures, it is a covenant, a calling, a cosmic bridge. But for the last century, that bridge has been under fire.

In the shadows of the 1920s, German doctor Magnus Hirschfeld's Institute for Sexual Science lit the lantern of queer research—only to be burned by Nazi hands. Yet from Harlem speakeasies to underground gatherings, queer Black and Brown creatives sang resistance in jazz tones and poetry lines.

In the 1950s and ’60s, the Mattachine Society and Daughters of Bilitis whispered bold truths behind closed doors. The Compton’s Cafeteria Riot of 1966—led by trans women—struck the first blow in San Francisco. Then came Stonewall, 1969—the thunderclap heard ‘round the world. Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera, and queer spirits rose against police violence, sparking the first Pride marches and a revolution of glitter and grit.

The 1980s raged with fire and mourning. AIDS decimated communities while the world turned a blind eye. ACT UP and the Lesbian Avengers turned grief into strategy, staging kiss-ins and die-ins, making the invisible seen.

From the 1990s forward, global voices rose—third genders recognized, rainbow flags waved in courtrooms, and marriage equality fought its way through centuries of silence. Still, in every gain, opposition followed. Every new law was met with backlash, every celebration countered by censorship.

Today, we face another storm. Bans on books, drag shows, and trans healthcare. Witch hunts dressed in political suits. A war on joy, on gender freedom, on sacred diversity.

But Pride has always been more than parades. It is protest, prayer, and portal.

And for those who walk the pagan path: we remember. The rainbow is not just ours—it is spirit’s promise. As witches, healers, rebels, and lovers of the liminal, we stand not just in allyship, but in kinship.

To harm one color is to dull the whole spectrum. To silence one soul is to weaken the web of life.

Similar Prophecies Around the World:

The Call to Renewal and Healing

Many cultures across the world share a prophecy of a great transition—a time of upheaval, purification, and ultimately, rebirth. Though these stories originate from vastly different societies and spiritual traditions, they align in their themes of destruction, renewal, and the return to sacred harmony.

Let’s explore some of these prophecies in depth and examine how they connect to each other and to the visions of Black Elk Speaks and the Rainbow Prophecy.

The Hopi Prophecy and the “Day of Purification”

Key Themes: The choice between balance and destruction, the emergence of a new way of life

The Hopi, among the most ancient of Indigenous Nations in North America, carry sacred wisdom passed through generations by oral tradition, song, and ceremony. Their teachings include a powerful and sobering prophecy—a series of Nine Signs foretelling the Day of Purification. This is not just an end, but a crossroads: a moment when the world teeters between two futures, and humanity must make a collective choice.

These Nine Signs describe changes in the land, the sky, and the behavior of peoples. They speak of unnatural weather patterns, the arrival of "spinning wheels filled with voices" (often interpreted as wagons or modern vehicles), the web of communication stretching across the Earth (possibly television and the internet), and a time when the Earth itself would shake and suffer, groaning under the weight of imbalance and human neglect.

In the Hopi vision, these are not punishments, but warnings—echoes of imbalance that mirror the disharmony of our choices.

At the heart of the prophecy is a choice between two paths:

  1. One path leads deeper into destruction—marked by war, greed, disconnection, and the exploitation of Earth and Spirit. This road is paved with denial, dominion, and disharmony. It is a descent into suffering, where sacred lifeways are forgotten.

  2. The other path is the path of renewal—where peace, harmony, and respect for all life are restored. This way returns us to sacred living, to balance with nature, to communal care and ancestral wisdom. It invites humans to become caretakers once more, not dominators—to live in reciprocity with the Earth and each other.

The prophecy describes a time when:

  • The land is poisoned (mirroring modern-day environmental destruction).

  • The sky is crossed with iron (planes, satellites, or missiles).

  • Strange beasts appear (perhaps referring to genetic modifications or new technologies).

  • People lose connection with spirit, leading to chaos.

The Day of Purification, then, is both a prophecy and a call to action. It is a reckoning, but also an opportunity—a moment to realign with sacred law. In the Hopi way, it is said that those who walk in truth, with open hearts and hands, will be guided safely through the storm.

As with many Indigenous prophecies around the world—from the Lakota's White Buffalo Calf Woman teachings to the Mayan calendar's cycles—the Hopi remind us that prophecy is not fate. It is potential. It is a mirror.

Connection to Black Elk’s Vision:

Like Black Elk’s Great Vision, the Hopi prophecy describes a coming together of many nations under one sacred hoop, a time when people must unite in spirit or risk losing everything. Black Elk saw this choice in his vision—people either walking in harmony with the sacred tree of life or becoming lost in destruction.

Will we remember the Earth as our mother? Will we reclaim right relationship with each other and the sacred? Or will we ignore the signs, and fall further into separation?

The choice is not made in a single moment, but in every step we take. Every breath, every offering, every act of care or cruelty writes our part in the unfolding prophecy.

The Mayan “Return of the Great Cycle”

Key Themes: The end of an era, a shift in consciousness, a new age of wisdom

The Mayan were brilliant astronomers, mathematicians, and keepers of cosmic rhythm. Their Long Count Calendar intricately tracked vast cycles of time, marking not just years but world ages—great epochs of human and planetary evolution. One such cycle, spanning approximately 5,126 years, culminated on December 21, 2012, sparking modern-day rumors and sensational headlines of a coming apocalypse.

However, among traditional Mayan elders and spiritual leaders, the message was never one of doom. Instead of an “end of the world,” they spoke of a shift in consciousness, a pivotal turning point known as the Return of the Great Cycle. According to their teachings, 2012 marked the end of one era and the beginning of another—a sacred reset of the cosmic clock, opening the door for realignment with nature, spirit, and ancestral wisdom.

This new cycle is seen as an invitation—a call to awaken. Humanity stands at a threshold, offered the chance to remember our place in the great web of life, to reclaim balance between the material and the spiritual, the Earth and the cosmos. As with other mythic transitions across cultures, the Mayan Great Cycle reminds us that every ending is also a beginning, and the future is shaped not by prophecy, but by the choices we make together.

They teach that:

  • The world moves through cycles of light and darkness, and we have just emerged from a long period of spiritual darkness.

  • Humanity has the opportunity to embrace higher consciousness, reconnect with sacred wisdom, and restore balance.

  • The end of the old cycle means that hierarchical power structures and disharmony will begin to dissolve, making way for a more interconnected world.

Connection to the Rainbow Prophecy:

The Mayan prophecy aligns with the Rainbow Prophecy’s idea of a new tribe—people of all backgrounds awakening to spiritual wisdom and working together for global healing. Both prophecies emphasize that this time is not just about survival but about stepping into a new way of being.

Hindu “Kali Yuga” and the Cycle of Ages

Key Themes: Spiritual decline followed by renewal, purification through hardship

In Hindu tradition, time is not linear—it is a cosmic wheel, endlessly turning through cycles of creation, preservation, and dissolution. These cycles are known as the Yuga Cycle, consisting of four great ages:

1. Satya Yuga (Age of Truth)

2. Treta Yuga

3. Dvapara Yuga

4. Kali Yuga (the current age)

Each Yuga marks a gradual decline in spiritual virtue and cosmic harmony, moving from golden light to the shadowed depths of human consciousness.

Kali Yuga: The Age of Darkness

We now live in Kali Yuga, the fourth and final age—a time foretold to be dominated by materialism, deception, spiritual confusion, and moral decay. It is said that in this age:

  • Dharma (cosmic order) stands on just one leg, teetering.

  • Falsehood is praised over truth.

  • Greed and ego eclipse compassion and unity.

  • Sacred knowledge becomes obscured by distortion and desire.

Wars rage, nature weeps, and spiritual practices are forgotten or commercialized. The divine is veiled, and humanity is caught in a state of forgetting.

But Kali Yuga is not without purpose—it is a sacred dark night of the soul, a purifying fire for the collective consciousness. From the depth of disconnection, the longing for truth is reborn.

The Dawn Beyond the Darkness

Ancient texts like the Puranas and the Mahabharata promise that Kali Yuga will not last forever. After its tumultuous end, the cosmic wheel turns again, ushering in the Satya Yuga, also known as Krta Yuga or the Golden Age.

In Satya Yuga:

  • Dharma stands strong on all four legs once more.

  • Humanity lives in peace, truth, and harmony with nature.

  • Spiritual knowledge is remembered, practiced, and lived.

  • The veils between the divine and the earthly grow thin.

This renewal doesn’t require everyone to awaken—only that the spark of divine remembrance survives. Many Hindu traditions, especially in yogic and bhakti lineages, teach that the seeds of Satya Yuga are planted within, and each act of compassion, meditation, or truth-telling helps weave the threads of the new age

Yet, Hindu teachings also say that spiritual seekers can still rise during Kali Yuga—those who dedicate themselves to truth, compassion, and sacred wisdom will help usher in the next era of harmony.

Connection to the Hopi and Black Elk Prophecies:

Like the Hopi Day of Purification, Kali Yuga warns of a moment when humanity must make a choice: continue in destruction or return to sacred balance. Black Elk also spoke of seeing his people suffer as they lost connection with their traditions, but he held onto the belief that one day, the sacred hoop would be mended. Kali Yuga, then, is not the end—it is the compost. The breakdown that leads to breakthrough. The sacred churning before the nectar rises.

Norse Ragnarök: Destruction and Rebirth

Key Themes: A great battle, the fall of an old order, the emergence of a new world

In Norse mythology, Ragnarök—often translated as “The Fate of the Gods” or “Twilight of the Gods”—is the prophesied cataclysm that brings about the end of the current cosmic order. It is not merely a doomsday but a transformative passage, a necessary unraveling that clears the way for rebirth and renewal.

The Markers of Ragnarök:

  • The Death of the Gods:

Mighty gods fall in the final battle. Odin, the Allfather, is swallowed by the monstrous wolf Fenrir. Thor, the thunder god, slays the world serpent Jörmungandr, but takes only nine steps before dying from its venom. Frey, god of fertility and prosperity, dies wielding a sword he once gave away for love. Even Loki, the trickster, meets his fate in combat against the god Heimdallr, and they perish together.

  • The World Engulfed:

The fabric of existence trembles. Earthquakes shatter the realms. The sky cracks open, stars vanish, and the fire giants of Muspelheim, led by Surtr, march across the Bifröst Bridge. The world is set ablaze, and the seas rise, flooding the land. The World Tree Yggdrasil shakes, but does not break.

  • The Collapse of Power:

The old order dies. Cosmic balances dissolve. Not only are gods slain, but so too are the institutions and boundaries they represented—war, fate, kinship, oaths, even time itself. This is the death of a paradigm, a total deconstruction of power, pride, and prophecy.

Despite the grim imagery, Ragnarök is not the end of all things. From the scorched remains of the world, a new earth rises, verdant and reborn. The sun’s daughter takes her mother’s place in the sky. Mountains re-emerge, clear waters flow again, and green shoots spring from the soil.

  • The Survivors:

A few gods endure—Baldr, the shining god once slain, returns from Hel’s domain. Höðr, his blind brother, walks beside him. Víðarr and Váli, sons of Odin, survive as well. And two humans, Líf and Lífthrasir, sheltered in the wood of Hoddmímis Holt, emerge to repopulate the world. Their names mean “Life” and “Eager for Life.”

  • A World Spiritually Renewed:

This new world is described as peaceful, just, and free of suffering. The golden tablets of divine knowledge lost in the old age are found again in the grass. Humanity lives in harmony with nature and with each other. The cycle of destruction and rebirth has restored cosmic balance.

Connection to the Mayan and Hindu Prophecies:

Like the Mayan “Return of the Great Cycle” and the Hindu “End of Kali Yuga,” Ragnarök describes a cleansing of corruption before a rebirth. The destruction is not an ending, but a transition into something new and sacred.

The Christian Revelation: The New Heaven and New Earth

Key Themes: Judgment, transformation, a world where balance is restored

Across many spiritual traditions, the end of one age often signals the beginning of another. In the Christian canon, the Book of Revelation offers one of the most powerful and symbolic accounts of this transformative process. Often viewed with fear or awe, Revelation speaks of great trials—wars, disasters, and the unraveling of worldly power structures. Yet through an interfaith lens, this text can be seen not only as a warning, but as a sacred metaphor for deep spiritual evolution.

The imagery within Revelation—beasts, seals, plagues, and trumpets—mirrors apocalyptic themes found across global traditions. In Hinduism, the Kali Yuga marks a time of chaos before spiritual renewal. In Indigenous prophecies, the end of one world leads to the rise of another based on balance and respect for all beings. Buddhist teachings speak of the impermanence of all things and the cyclical nature of suffering and awakening. Revelation joins this chorus, echoing humanity's collective understanding that times of great upheaval often precede awakening, healing, and a return to sacred alignment.

The heart of Revelation is not destruction—it is restoration. After the storm, a New Heaven and New Earth arise. The Divine dwells with humanity once more, not from above but within the world itself. Suffering fades. Tears are wiped away. The Tree of Life reappears as a symbol of enduring wholeness, offering fruit and healing to all nations. For people of all paths, this can be read as a call to live in right relationship—with each other, with the earth, and with the sacred however we name it.

Connection to the Other Prophecies:

Much like the other traditions, Revelation does not see the end times as pure destruction but as a necessary shift to a better reality. This mirrors the Rainbow Prophecy’s call for people of all backgrounds to come together and build a new world based on wisdom, love, and balance. Revelation invites us to honor the trials of transformation and to participate in the birth of a more just, compassionate, and spirit-infused world. Whether we interpret these visions literally, symbolically, or mythologically, their resonance speaks to a shared human yearning: that from darkness, light returns—and that peace is not just possible, but promised when we co-create it.

Cross-Comparisons: The Common Threads of Prophecy

Despite differences in culture and belief systems, these prophecies share key themes:

1. A period of corruption and imbalance – Whether it’s the Kali Yuga, the Hopi’s unbalanced world, or the age leading to Ragnarök, many traditions describe an era of spiritual darkness before the shift.

2. A warning to humanity – Prophets, visionaries, and seers have all warned that unless humanity changes its ways, destruction will follow.

3. A time of great transition – Many traditions speak of a choice or crossroads, where people must either align with spirit or fall further into chaos.

4. The emergence of spiritual warriors – The Rainbow Warriors, the wise people of the new Satya Yuga, the survivors of Ragnarök—each prophecy speaks of a group of individuals who help guide the world into the next era.

5. A renewal of life and spirit – These stories are not just about destruction. They are about the return to harmony, the rebirth of the sacred, and the restoration of balance.

Why These Prophecies Matter Today

These prophecies are not just stories from the past—they are calls to action for the present. Many believe we are living in the time they describe: a world facing environmental destruction, deep social divides, and a struggle between materialism and spiritual wisdom.

But the message is clear: those who feel the call to heal, to teach, and to restore balance are part of the transformation.

This is why we use Black Elk Speaks in our life coaching program—because it teaches that even in times of hardship, spirit still calls, and healers must rise.

The question is: Will you answer the call?

The Call of the Healers: Answering the Prophecies

If these prophecies are correct, then we are living in the time of awakening. The call to become a healer, a wisdom keeper, or a bridge between spirit and the material world is louder than ever. Many feel it as an internal shift—a knowing that they are meant to do something greater.

This is why we use Black Elk Speaks in our spiritual life coaching program. It is not just a history book or a collection of visions. It is a sacred teaching, showing the personal struggles of a healer, the importance of vision, and the responsibility of guiding others.

Students in our program read Black Elk Speaks to:

  • Understand the deep sacrifices and commitment of spiritual work.

  • Learn how to navigate visions, intuitive gifts, and healing callings.

  • Connect with the idea of all nations coming together as one hoop, one family.

  • Embrace the role of a healer, teacher, and guide in their own communities.

The book is a map. A lantern in the dark. A reminder that even in times of suffering, spirit speaks, and the path forward is always one of healing.

Elk Medicine

The elk is a sacred symbol of endurance, strength, and spiritual stamina—an animal that teaches us the power of steady perseverance and communal support.

In many Indigenous traditions, including those echoed in Black Elk Speaks, the elk embodies balance between individual power and the well-being of the greater herd, reminding us that true strength is not about domination but about resilience, wisdom, and harmony with the natural world.

On the Pagan coaching path, elk medicine encourages seekers to trust in their personal journey, knowing that spiritual growth is not a race but a lifelong walk of endurance and sacred responsibility. Just as Black Elk’s vision spoke of unity and the need for spiritual warriors to rise, the elk teaches us that our personal healing is intrinsically connected to the collective.

As coaches, mentors, and healers, we are called to embody this wisdom—to pace ourselves, to listen to the land and our intuition, and to stand strong in the face of transformation. Whether guiding a student, walking through personal trials, or holding space for another’s healing, elk reminds us to move with purpose, patience, and deep-rooted connection to Spirit.

Walking the Path Forward

The words of Black Elk, the Rainbow Prophecy, and the wisdom of global traditions call to us now more than ever. Those who resonate with these messages are likely part of the new wave of healers—those here to mend the spiritual fractures of our time.

By learning from the past, embracing our gifts, and stepping forward as wisdom keepers, we become the bridge between the world that was and the world that will be.

If you hear the call, it is because you are meant to answer it. Let Black Elk Speaks be one of your guides on this journey.
